How to Keep Yourself Focused

When trying to reach a goal, one of the hardest things to do sometimes is to stay focused. There are lots of distractions that can take your attention away from what you want to do, but luckily there are ways to block them out and focus on the task at hand. In this post, I’ll provide tips on how to do that.

Identify your motivations.

It is essential to understand what motivates your personality in order to stay focused on your goals. Keeping focused can be achieved through a variety of motivations:

  • Motivating with incentives: This type of motivation involves rewarding yourself when you reach certain marks. If you finish a large project by the end of the day, you might reward yourself with a nice meal.  This works well for people trying to reach weight loss goals too – you can motivate yourself to exercise by promising yourself a treat if you exercise so many times per week or so many minutes per week. Or you can keep yourself motivated to eat within your calorie budget by rewarding yourself with an indulgent treat if you lose weight at the end of the week.
  • Accomplishment – A second type of motivation is motivation based on accomplishing something. An example of this motivation is when you anticipate achieving something due to your work. This works great for students who are trying to meet a test score, or for people who are training for a competition. You can use this motivation to incentivize yourself to study or train for your competition.
  • Fear – Fear-based motivation can be a great incentive to stay focused. You might be motivated to focus on school or work tasks if you fear not reaching your goals or getting reprimanded for not finishing tasks.

Make a list of your goals.

You can also focus by writing down your goals and keeping them where you can see them. This reminds you why you’re working and improves your focus. It also helps you plan how to achieve them.

Writing down your goals also allows you to assess their strength. A strong goal is specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-based. These attributes help make your goals more achievable. For example, setting a goal to complete a project by the end of a quarter is an example of a SMART goal.

Set goal milestones.

Set milestones once you’ve set a goal. This is very helpful for achieving large goals. A milestone helps you stay focused by breaking a large goal into smaller, more achievable parts.

As an example, if you want to open a small business by the year’s end, you can set milestones for creating a business plan, locating investors, and launching a website.

Make a plan and follow it

Setting milestones is one way to achieve goals. A plan helps you identify smaller tasks related to a larger goal, helping you focus. Depending on its scope, you can use these planning strategies:

  • Organizing your time – One goal-planning strategy is scheduling time to work on it. A weekly planner or digital tools can help you plan tasks.
  • Creating to-do lists – To-do lists let you keep track of your tasks as you accomplish them. You can create daily, weekly, and monthly to-do lists to help you stay focused.

Manage your time effectively

Managing your time effectively is important for maintaining focus and promoting productivity. When you manage your time effectively, you will have enough time to accomplish your goal. You can use the following time management techniques to promote focus:

  • The quadrant system – This time management system divides your daily tasks into four categories based on urgency and importance. There are four categories: manage, focus, avoid, and limit. You can use this strategy to focus on important tasks while avoiding distractions.
  • 52-17 rule – This time management method involves working for 52 minutes and taking a break for 17 minutes.
  • Pomodoro technique – This method consists of working for 100 minutes followed by a 25-minute break. You can use this technique to stay motivated and focused.

Bring tasks to completion

Another strategy to promote focus is to finish the tasks you start. This can help you avoid procrastination and accomplish your goals. Emphasizing finishing tasks can also help you manage your time effectively.

Consider your work environment

Another element to consider is your work environment when you want to maintain concentration on your goals. If your work environment includes distractions, consider ways to limit or minimize them. Here are a few examples  of ways you can avoid distractions to focus on your goals:

  • Clean your desk – A clean desk where you can easily find your supplies can help you maintain focus and mental clarity as you work toward your goals.
  • Use headphones – If you work in an area with other people, you can use headphones to listen to music or other pounds that promote focus.

Measure your goals

To improve your concentration on your goals, you can measure your progress each day, week, and month. Measuring your goals can give you an accurate timeline for completion and motivate you to keep working toward achieving your goals.

Share your commitment to your goals

Another way you can maintain your focus is to share your intentions and goals with others. Here are a few benefits of using this strategy:

  • Find others with similar goals. One advantage to sharing your goals with others is that you can find people who are working towards the same or similar goals. This can help motivate you toward achieving them.
  • Have accountability – Another benefit of discussing your goals with others is it gives you a sense of accountability toward completing your goals, which also motivates you to keep working toward them.

Address negativity

Just as positivity can be powerful for productivity and motivation, negativity can act as a barrier. However, avoiding negative thoughts isn’t always possible. If you have doubts or frustration as you work to finish your goals, you can address these thoughts and their validity. Addressing negativity can help you overcome this challenge and stay motivated.

Visualize the results

Another motivator for concentration is visualizing the results of achieving your goal. Thinking about the outcome of your work can improve your dedication and focus on your goals. It can also help you encourage yourself to keep working when you experience challenges or setbacks.

Evaluate your progress

Stay on track by evaluating your progress toward your goals periodically. Besides motivating you to work towards them, it also makes you feel accomplished for what you have accomplished so far. As you progress towards your goals, you can also modify your plans based on your evaluation of your progress.

Ways to Improve Your Focus

If you’ve done all of the above and are still having trouble staying focused, what should you do? There are a few other things you can do to improve your focus:

  • Become mindful – Mindfulness is a form of meditation that concentrates on the present moment. When you practice mindfulness, you can better manage distractions or focus.
  • Focus on fewer tasks – Another way to improve your concentration is to focus on fewer tasks. By avoiding multitasking, you can improve your ability to focus.
  • Limit distractions – Be aware of and limit distractions while working. If your phone distracts you often, put it in another room or in a drawer.
  • Try taking short breaks – It may seem counterintuitive, but it can improve your focus. Take breaks between tasks or set a timer to take a break once an hour to determine which strategy works best for improving your ability to focus. This is a perfect application for the Pomodoro technique since it incorporates breaks.

That’s what you need to know about how to keep yourself focused on achieving your goals. Once you know what motivates you and have your goals written down in a place where you’ll see them, you’ll have a better chance of staying motivated to achieve your goals. But if you still have problems staying focused from time to time, the tips provided at the end can give you a little extra help staying focused so you can achieve your goals.
